Why Physical Therapy Isn’t Just About Exercises (It’s Like an Open-Book Test)

A lot of people assume physical therapy is just about giving out exercises. And because of that, they think, why not just look on YouTube for exercises, or ask ChatGPT, or scroll TikTok for rehab routines?

That actually reminds me of my very first open-book test in college.

The Open-Book Test Mistake

I struggled a lot with physics in undergrad. When I found out the tests for one of my physics classes would be open-book, I thought, Great! I don’t even need to study. The answers will all be right there.

But when the first test came around, I quickly realized that having the book in front of me didn’t actually help. The clock was ticking, and I didn’t know what to look for, how to find it quickly, or how to put it together into the right answer.

Even though all the information was right there, I couldn’t apply it in real time.

After that test, I learned my lesson that having resources is not the same as actually knowing how to use them.

Rehab Works the Same Way

Rehab is a lot like that.

All the information is out there. Every exercise you could ever need is online. But here’s the catch:

  • If you don’t know what you’re looking for…

  • If you don’t know how to interpret the information…

  • If you don’t know how to put it together in the right order…

…it’s not actually that helpful.

You might eventually stumble across the right thing, but it could take months or even years. And along the way, you risk making things worse.

Why Working With a Physical Therapist Saves You Time

This is where I come in as a physical therapist. My job isn’t to just hand you exercises. My job is to take all the information from your assessment and tailor it to your specific issue, your goals, and your timeline.

Instead of wasting time guessing, you get a clear plan that moves you forward.

Because just like that open-book test, having access to information doesn’t mean you know how to use it. What makes the difference is knowing what matters for you and how to apply it.

Takeaway

Physical therapy isn’t about the exercises; it’s about the strategy behind them.

Information ≠ Progress.

Application = Results.

Ready for a Real Plan?

If you’ve been trying to figure things out on your own and feel stuck, you don’t have to keep guessing. Working with a Physical Therapist can save you time and frustration, and help you actually get back to the things you care about.

If that sounds like the step you’re ready to take, I’d love to help. Book a call today!
